Typed Letters vs. Yellow Letters

When should I send a typed letter in a hand addressed envelope rather than a yellow letter?

We get that question a lot, and one of the most important factors when making that decision is the mailing list.

Are you marketing to a list where credibility is important, or would you rather keep your message informal and low-key?

Yellow letters are informal which is part of the reason they can generate such a high response rate. Typed letters are more formal and can give the sender more credibility, but a typed address on the envelope screams mass marketing and will significantly reduce the response rate. Mailing a typed letter in a hand addressed envelope makes sure the envelope will get opened, and then the person will see the typed letter inside giving you a more professional appearance.
